Wildlife photography is thrilling, challenging, and endlessly rewarding—but it’s also a genre where preparation is everything. From understanding your gear to anticipating animal behavior, each moment in the field is a chance to capture magic. At The Shutterbug, we love helping photographers of all levels get the most out of their cameras, and we’re excited to offer hands-on guidance at our upcoming Canon Wildlife Photography Walks: March 13th at 4 PM in Salem and March 14th at 7:30 AM in Beaverton.
Here are some insider tips to start improving your wildlife shots—without giving away all the secrets you’ll learn on the walk!
1. Know Your Gear
Your camera and lenses are your best friends in wildlife photography. Practice using your camera’s settings, autofocus modes, and exposure options in controlled environments—think local zoos or parks. Even squirrels and crows count as practice subjects! Test your ISO limits, experiment with noise reduction, and set up custom buttons and AF configurations to build muscle memory before you encounter a fleeting wild subject.
2. Think About Stabilization
Tripods and monopods aren’t just for landscapes—they help keep your shots sharp and reduce fatigue during long waits for wildlife appearances. Combine them with lens hoods and protective filters for extra versatility.

3. Understand Light and Composition
Wildlife photography is all about timing and light. Pay attention to backgrounds and how they separate your subject from distractions. Even if your lens isn’t a high-end telephoto, clever composition can make your subject pop. And remember, a noisy image is better than a blurry one—so don’t be afraid to push your ISO when needed.
4. Study Your Subject
Knowing animal behavior and habitat can drastically improve your chances of capturing the perfect shot. Observe patterns, feeding times, and movement, and always prioritize safety—for yourself and the wildlife.
5. Post-Processing Matters
Learning to edit your images in Lightroom or other software can take a good shot and make it great. Even simple adjustments to exposure, noise reduction, and contrast can elevate your photos.
